Stock Code: P223015361

1838 Maritime Mail. Very fine cover endorsed 'Per Platina' a convict ship returning from Hobart in early 1838 which probably also called at the Cape of Good Hope enroute. Landed at New Romney and routed to Lanark via London with a London cds on reverse for AU.8.1838 and a red 'INDIA LETTER/ROMNEY' handstamp (Robertson type IN1) applied from a duplicate set of handstamps that were kept at the London Ship Letter Office and used in the 1830's, distinguishable by being struck in red. The obverse shows the very scarce black boxed 'India/Letter' handstamp (Robertson IN10) believed to have been used in London by Robertson but as all 12 examples known are on letters landed at New Romney that may not be the case. Letter treated as a double and rated finally at '2/8½' (4d as an India Letter, 1s2d x2 for Inland postage plus halfpenny road toll tax). The additional road toll tax indicated by a boxed '½' handstamp. A very scarce and intriguing cover.
