A Plate Proof is essentially a trial run of a full sheet of stamps that was produced to make sure that the design and layout were correct. Modifications were usually needed and these would be marked on the proofs to show what problems needed to be fixed. Due to the errors that this process produced a rare or exceptional plate proof can be very valuable and is a fascinating area of philately.
