1862 (OC 2) folded entire letter from Edward C. Dillon at Plantation Reliance to F. Pollard at Demerara, endorsed "Per Mail 2 Octr 1862 /Paid" at upper left, franked at 8c double rate by 1862 (Sept) Typeset 2c black/yellow VERTICAL STRIP OF FOUR, tied by individual mostly very fine strikes of "A 4 C" coded cds. On reverse, further very fine strike of despatch cds, and Demerara arrival cds of same day. The 2c strip is the complete sixth column of the 6x4 setting, showing types 10 x2 (R1/6, 2/6), 11 (R3/6, variety "Italic T in TWO") and 12 (R4/6, variety "C for O in POSTAGE") SE-TENANT. Upper pair with some affixative gum stains mentioned for accuracy, nevertheless a spectacular and unique cover which is quite simply the greatest item surviving from this popular and fascinating provisional issue, and arguably one of the most famous and important of all British Guiana covers, with a suitably impressive pedigree. Ex Ferrary (sale 2, 13 Oct 1921, lot 266 - "piece d'une grande rarete"), Burrus (Robson Lowe, 26 Nov 1963, lot 142), Amundsen (SGA 6 Dec 1967, lot 97), Foxbridge and Dupont (Feldman 27 June 2014, lot 60102 - realised EUR 46,000+), and illustrated on Plate 11 of the 1970 Handbook by Townsend & Howe. [N.B. Only a few single franking covers with this 1862 issue are recorded, and no used multiple off-cover larger than a pair is known to us.]
