MALAYA JAP OCC 1942 Cover Labuan "Dai-Nippon Teikoku Seifu" handstamps on Cover

Stock Code: P234006868

1942 (13 OC) cover locally addressed in Labuan with 1942 (1 Oct ?) short "set" of 12 to $1, comprising 1937-41 Straits Settlements Die I 1c, 8c, 1 0c, 25c, 40c, 50c and $1 and Die II 2c orange, 3c green, 5c brown and 15c ultramarine, each with diagonal "Dai-Nippon Teikoku Seifu" one-line Japanese handstamp (= "Imperial Government of Great Japan" in vermilion or violet-black (2c, 5c, 10c, 25c, 40c), tied by individual clear strikes of Proud type D11 pre-war LABUAN cds (known used during the Occupation from 8 May to 1 Dec 1942).

A spectacular and extremely rare usage of these short-lived and little-known Japanese Occupation overprints which will be listed for the first time in Part 1 2025. They are of the same style and function as those introduced in Brunei, North Borneo and Sarawak on 30 Sept to Oct 1942, and part of the same administrative procedure, but whereas the similar overprints of Brunei, North Borneo and Sarawak were applied to the current local stamps, in the case of Labuan (previously part of the Straits Settlements), stamps of Straits Settlements were naturally those immediately available in the Post Office.. [During the Japanese Occupation, by contrast, Labuan was administered as part of Borneo again.]

The date of withdrawal is unknown, but it seems likely that after a very short time higher Japanese authorities objected to the continued use of stamps with the KGVI (enemy !) portrait.

A great item, of the highest historical interest. Ex Masayochi Tsuchiya collection, with BPA certificate (2023).
