MALAYA - PAHANG 1935 SG29s/46s Specimen original set of 15 to $5 from the Bechuanaland archive

Stock Code: P234001537

1935-41 original set of 15 to $5 (lacking the later 1941 3c, 8c, 15c), perf "SPECIMEN" (type D19, except $1 to $5 D20), the unique set (part to large part disturbed o.g.) from the Bechuanaland P.O. archive, with additional seriffed "SPECIMEN" diagonal receiving handstamped overprints in black or violet. The handstamps are Bendon type BEC2a (22.5 x 2.75mm) with the exception of the 6c scarlet which shows a clear impression of the remarkable smaller type (19.5x2.25mm) believed to have been applied in London to odd stamps which had escaped the normal defacement, and previously noted by Bendon only on a few stamps of Morocco Agencies and Tangier. The last sadly defective, nevertheless a fascinating set. [The Bechuanaland archive was returned to London c. 1937, and subsequently sold by Robson Lowe Zurich in 1976 - see Bendon "UPU SPECIMEN STAMPS 1878-1961", p.24.]
