NEW ZEALAND 1882 SG226f/g Mint 1s red-brown, wmk 12b, perf 10, variety "Bulbous nose", with brown-purple advert, pog

Stock Code: P223010291

1882-1900 "Second sideface" 1s red-brown, Wmk 12b, perf 10, with 1893 brown-purple advert from 3rd setting, exceptionally showing the prominent plate flaw "Bulbous nose" (Lower right pane, R1/1), fresh and well-centred, part o.g. A fascinating rarity for the specialist, which may well be the only surviving MINT example with this combination of plate flaw and advert. [The sheet position is corroborated by wmk lines indicating R1/1 on a pane, while the "CREASE'S / A1 / COFFEE" advert is the expected type, being R1/6 from the lower LEFT advert pane, as seen from the back.]. N.B. Various approaches can be taken in attempting to assess the notional catalogue value of this potentially unique stamp. Clearly it must be many times rarer than the same flaw without advert (= SG 226g, cat £650), while the flaw itself occurs just once in a sheet of 240, so the x5 premium over the normal (cat £130) might be considered conservative, although it could reasonably also be applied to the "normal" with this colour advert (= SG 226f, cat £375). In practice, it seems most unlikely that 240 such mint normals could exist, meaning that the very survival of this "flaw + advert" combination must be a happy chance rather than an expected probability. By any measure this is a desirable stamp !
